Slave tax badge, 1812

Tax badges were used in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, where enslaved people outnumbered white people. To control the local enslaved population, the city required enslavers to register their slaves for hire in occupations such as servants, porters, street peddlers, and mechanics. Each registered slave wore a tax badge such as this one.
