Passengers often purposefully called Porters incorrect names, such as “George” after the Pullman Company’s founder, George Pullman. J. J. Bryant’s name plaque, placed in the car he served, helped ensure that passengers knew his name. On these plaques, porters used their first initials so passengers had to call them by their correct names.
