Berth key, undated

Porters prepared fold-down beds, or sleeping berths, for overnight travelers using a special key like this one to unlock and lower each bed. This was one of the porters’ most time-consuming and dangerous tasks. The heavy beds sometimes popped open on rough train tracks, injuring porters.
