Commemorative spoon, 1896

Mary Richardson Jones owned this commemorative Douglass spoon. Chicagoan Samuel W. Thompson, an African American man who sold jewelry, designed it in 1896, a year after Douglass’s death. The years on the handle mark moments in his life, including escaping from slavery (1838) and recruiting African Americans into the Union army (1863).
