Mary Richardson Jones’s freedom certificates, 1844

By Illinois law Mary and John Jones had to prove their free status with a certificate. To receive these freedom certificates, they applied to a court in Madison County, Illinois, where they lived in 1844. The certificate stated that the bearer “is a free person of color.”
