Anna Elizabeth Hudlin and her husband Joseph Hudlin belonged to Quinn Chapel AME Church and were prominent members of Chicago’s growing African American community in the mid-1800s. They were the first Black family to build their own home in Chicago, and they fought for their children’s right to integrated public education. The Hudlins also sheltered people who lost their homes during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
