In 1968, activists formed the nationwide American Indian Movement (AIM). Controversy followed AIM, because of its confrontational and sometimes violent public protests. AIM leaders came to Wounded Knee to publicize bad government policies and broken treaties, as referenced on this drum. Some supported AIM, while others believed its leaders did not care about Wounded Knee.
