Cover, “How Are You Conscript?” sheet music, 1863

Northern soldiers and civilians sang this popular song about conscripts—men drafted to serve, as opposed to those who volunteered. The partial lyrics on the cover refered to the practice of commutation, which allowed draftees to pay a fee, usually a few hundred dollars, or ‘greenbacks’ to legally avoid military service.
