Cover, The Flag with 34 Stars, sheet music, c. 1861

The 34-star flag became official in July 1861, when Kansas was admitted to the union. During the Civil War, stars were never removed from the United States flag, even when states seceded from the union. While southern states were not represented in Congress during the war, their stars always remained on the flag.
