In 1912, male voters in Chicago, were polled using ballots like this one that asked “Do you approve of extending suffrage to women?” The majority of male voters answered no. The vote was only to gauge public opinion and had no legal standing. Just a year later, in 1913 women won the right to vote in Illinois.
